Frequently asked Questions

Do I have to be Orthodox to participate in programs offered by Zemach Zedek?

Zemach Zedek is inclusive and non-judgmental, and our programs are open to all Jews. In fact, often the majority of people who participate in programs at Zemach Zedek are not orthodox. The programs at Zemach Zedek are imbued with the renowned spirit and joy, but in no way is the commitment to all Orthodox or Ultra-Orthodox lifestyle a prerequisite to one's acceptance at Zemach Zedek.

Is it the goal of Zemach Zedek to make me Orthodox?

Zemach Zedek is dedicated to helping every Jew, regardless of background, affiliation, or personal level of observance, to increase their level of Jewish knowledge, enthusiasm, and commitment. Zemach Zedek invites you to explore the complex areas of Jewish religion, tradition and practice in an open minded and non-judgmental atmosphere. All of Zemach Zedek's classes, programs, and services are designed to heighten the awareness and lend valuable insight into one's heritage, traditions, religious practice, laws and rituals. Each individual is invited to participate, study, learn and inquire. Each individual makes his or her own respective religious lifestyle decisions at his or her own pace.

Does Zemach Zedek consider Reform, Conservative, or non-practicing Jews as "real" Jews?

At Zemach Zedek we avoid labeling fellow Jews, since it tends to divide and create barriers between us. Jewish Law has traditionally considered anyone born of a Jewish mother or converted in accordance with Halachah to be a Jew, regardless of his or her degree of observance ...and so we do.

Does Zemach Zedek support the State of Israel?

Zemach Zedek strongly supports Israel and is deeply involved in defending its value and right to exist. Zemach Zedek has been sending financial support for Israel's needy since just after its founding. Zemach Zedek is proud of those who serve in the IDF, including from among our own, and we contribute practical and spiritual support to the troops.

What value do Jewish women hold at Zemach Zedek?

Ignorance, misconceptions, and outright myths about Jewish women have prevailed until very recently. We at Zemach Zedek present and stress views that aim to correct these misconceptions and convey an accurate and deeper perspective of the Jewish Woman. The high standing of the Jewish woman is central to the survival of Judaism and our future generations. As the cornerstone of Jewish family life, a woman can attain a uniquely profound and meaningful spirituality, one that fulfills her deepest needs and aspirations opening fresh perspectives on self-understanding, growth and Torah knowledge.
